Valery Gergiev conducts Sergei Prokofiev's opera 'The Fiery Angel' in David Freeman's superbly original and imaginatively daring production, which resulted from a collaboration between the Kirov Opera and the Royal Opera, Covent Garden. The video*, directed by Brian Large, was recorded live at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg in 1993. Prokofiev's disturbingly enigmatic work is a tale of the supernatural, of religious hysteria and demonic possession, set in Germany at the time of the Inquisition. The Russian cast features the brilliant soprano Galina Gorchakova as Renata and distinguished baritone Sergei Leiferkus as Ruprecht.
