Joseph Haydn who, during his stay in England, was very impressed by the cultivation of Handel and the oratorio tradition, had brought a draft libretto of an oratorio back to Vienna which, based on Milton’s ‘Paradise Lost’, contained the story of the creation. In Vienna, his friend Count Gottfried van Swieten encouraged him to write an oratorio in German based on this text.
