A Florentine Tragedy, Zemlinsky's 1917 one-act opera, concerns the young Prince of Florence, Guido, who falls in love with Bianca, the wife of a merchant. Their intrigues arouse the suspicions of Bianca's husband, Simone, and eventually lead to tragic consequences. This excellent performance, recorded live in St. Petersburg, is a triumph of the Kirov Opera at the 1999 White Nights Festival. The plot to A Florentine Tragedy was inspired by Oscar Wilde's play of the same name. It is impossible to disassociate its conception from a traumatic event to which Zemlinsky was personally indirectly linked...
