Ekaterina Semenchuk

Born in Minsk in 1976, Ekaterina Semenchuk entered the Belarusian Music Academy in 1995 to learn with V.N. Rogovich. Since 1998, she has been a student at the St Petersburg Conservatoire in the class of Professor E.S. Gorochovskaya. She joined the Young Singers' Academy of the Mariinsky Theatre in 1999.

Ms Semenchuk's awards include diplomas for the operatic and chamber singing at the Dvorák Competition (Czech Republic, 1997) and the 'Hope' prize and the prize for best performance of a modern St Petersburg composer's work at the International Obraztova Competition (St Petersburg, 1999). Ms Semenchuk also won First Prize at the 4th International Rimsky-Korsakov Vocal Competition (St Petersburg, 2000).

Ms Semenchuk has appeared in a number of operatic roles, including the Nurse and Olga (Eugene Onegin), Marta (Iolanta), Suzuki (Madama Butterfly), Lyubasha (The Tsar's Bride), Lel (The Snow Maiden), Polina/Milovzor (The Queen of Spades), Sonya (War and Peace), Dido (Dido and Aeneas), the Boy (The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh) and Ascanio (Benvenuto Cellini). Her recital repertoire also includes romances and songs by Russian and European composers.

Ms Semenchuk has toured with the Mariinsky Company in China, Great Britain (Covent Garden), Germany (Baden-Baden) and Italy (La Scala). In 1999-2000 she gave a series of recitals in St Petersburg (Philharmonic Small Hall, Winter Palace), Moscow Kremlin, Great Britain (London, Birmingham, Edinburgh and the Summer on the Peninsula festival) and USA (New York). Future engagements include recitals in Great Britain with pianist Larissa Gergieva, tours with the Kirov Opera in Salzburg (The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh), and performing Les Contes d'Hoffmann at the Mariinsky Theatre, directed by Marta Domingo.
