GMN Spotlight on Ekaterina Semenchuk, mezzo-soprano
GMN Spotlight on Ekaterina Semenchuk, mezzo-soprano Plácido Domingo's Operalia 2000 competition, supported by the arts patron Alberto Vilar, featured a number of remarkable finalists, among them the young mezzo-soprano Ekatarina Semenchuk, whose unusually gifted voice has been gaining the attention of press and public alike, notably in her roles with the Kirov Opera. Currently at the Kirov Academy, Semenchuk's potential was initially spotted by the distinguished accompanist and vocal coach, Larissa Gergieva, who described her voice as "a gift from the gods". GMN recorded Ekaterina Semenchuk at her UK solo debut at the Summer on the Peninsula Festival in August 2000, with a programme of Russian song:

 Alexander Borodin
Sea Princess
My songs are full of poison
At strange people's homes

 Mily Alexeyevich Balakirev
A cliff
My soul is torn
Hug me, kiss me
Selim's song
I loved him

 Modest Mussorgsky
Hopak - Ukranian folk dance

 Sergei Rachmaninov
A morning
On a siskin's death
In the silence of a secret night
A river lily

 Piotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky
Do not ask...
I was like grass in the field

 Saint-Saens, Camille
Amour! viens aider ma faiblesse! (from Samson et Dalila)
