Debussy from Delos and GMN
In 1950, the great American composer and critic, Virgil Thomson Described Debussy's art as "the summit to which, during the two centuries since Rameau's death, French music has risen and from which, at least for the present, it seems to decline. Internationally viewed...he is to the musicians of our century everywhere what Beethoven was to those of the nineteenth, our blinding light, our sun, our central luminary."
Some fifty years after the astute Mr Thomson penned these words, they still ring true to many music-lovers and musicians around the world. GMN Premium, in association with pioneering record label, Delos, will be presenting the complete chamber music of Claude Debussy over the next few weeks.
The artists involved in the project could hardly be higher profile: The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center include some of the top musicians in the United States, including GMN Artists David Shifrin, Anne-Marie McDermott and Paul Neubauer. Under the artistic direction of clainettist Shifrin, the group are stay true to Lincoln Center's first President, William Schuman's pioneering structure - a core of distinguished Artist members augmented by invited guests, allowing it to present concerts that may include any instrumental combination in any style and from any historical period.
