Warlock, Peter [Heseltine, Philip (Arnold)]

(Born; London, 30 Oct 1894; Died; there, 17 Dec 1930). English composer. He was self-taught, though in contact with Delius from 1910, and was a friend of Van Dieren, Moeran and Lambert. Under his original name of Heseltine he wrote on music and edited English works of the Elizabethan era. As Warlock he produced a large output of songs, some dark, desolate and bleakly intense (The Curlew for tenor and sextet, 1922), others rumbustious, amorous or charming, but all informed by an exceptional sensitivity to words and high technical skill. He also wrote choral music and a few instrumental pieces (notably Capriol Suite for strings, 1926, based on 16th-century dances).
