Gauntlett, Henry John

(Born; Wellington, Salop, 9 July 1805; Died; London, 21 Feb 1876). English organist,composer and critic. He was a church organist in London, introducing the C organ compass, compiling hymn books and composing hymn tunes, notably Irby ('Once in royal David's city'). He also contributed to several music journals on topics including Bach, Beethoven and Gregorian plainsong.
