Rose Mercedes Ayarza de Morales

(Born, Lima 1881, died Lima 1969). Peruvian composer and conductor. Began music studies with her Aunt, Ayarza Shepherd, and was considered a young prodigy, being able to read music at sight with great proficiency. Her first public performance occurred at the age of eight, and by 1901 was undertaking singing and piano lessons with Claudius Rebagliati and later Federico Gerdes. She was an important musical figure in establishing a musical tradition in Peru, and included many elements of Peruvian folk music within her compositions. Morales was also involved in the direction and production of many large-scale zarzuelas, and this paved the way for many Peruvian líricos singers including Lucrecia Sarria, Alexander Granda, Luis Alva and Ernesto Palace to enter the world musical scene. She is also remembered for her interest in and compilation of numerous collections of Peruvian folk songs. Some of her most popular songs include Cuando la tortora llora, La rosa y el Clavel and Hasta la guitarra llora.
