Bevin, Elway
Biography
Elway Bevin
(Born;Circa; 1554; Died; Bristol, bur. 19 Oct 1638). Composer
of Welsh extraction. Possibly a pupil of Tallis, he was briefly at Wells Cathedral and
then Master of the Choristers (1585) and organist (1589) at Bristol Cathedral. In 1605 he
became a Gentleman Extraordinary of the Chapel Royal. He composed mainly sacred music,
notably a Dorian or Short Service, and instrumental pieces. His Briefe and Short
Instruction in the Art of Musicke (1631) contains ingenious canons.
