Manuel Penella

(Born in Valencia, 31 July 1880, died in Mexico 24 January 1939). Spanish composer and librettist. Penella showed early promise as a violinist, but an accident to his left hand forced him to consider other options. Following graduation, he began work as a church organist in Valencia, but was soon drawn into composing music for the theatre, the first of his Zarzuelas La fiesta del pueblo being completed in 1894. Penella was a prolific traveller, and spent many years abroad, Latin America, Cuba, Mexico and the United States amongst his favourite destinations.

Some of his best known works include El día de reyes (1907), La muñeca del amor (1914), El gato montés (The Wildcat), (1916), Don Gil de Alcalá (1932), and La malquerida (1935), and one of the most notable features of Penella's compositions was his ability to write his own libretti, having done so from 1916 onwards.
