Biography
Pablo Luna

(Born 21 May 1879, died 28 January 1942). Spanish composer, violinist and conductor. Luna studied composition and harmony with Miguel Arnaudas and violin with Teodoro Ballo at the School of Music in Zaragoza. He followed this with casual work in theatre orchestras, becoming the leader of the Teatro Circo Orchestra when only twenty one. He composed predominantly in the style of the zarzuela, his first work appearing in 1903 with Lolilla, la Petenera.

In 1910 his work Molinos de viento was premiered in Seville. It heralded his debut as a writer in the Viennese operetta style and from this point his fame as a composer spread. He followed this initial success with a number of similar works: Los cadetes de la reina (1913), El asombro de Damasco (1916), El niño judío (1918) and Los calabreses (1918), a number of these works being performed at theatres throughout London's West End.

Luna returned to his Spanish roots in the latter half of the 1920s, with the composition of such works as La pastorela (1926), written in collaboration with Torroba, La chula de Pontevedra (1928), and La picara molinera (1928). In later years, he also experimented with the 'talkie' genre, wrote a tone poem, and composed several more zarzuelas. He died in Spain in 1942, leaving his last known work El Pilar de la Victoria to be completed by Julio Gómez, the work then premiering in Zaragoza - Luna's home city - two years later.
