Salomon, Johann Peter

(Born; Bonn, bap. 20 Feb 1745; Died; London, 28 Nov 1815). German violinist, impresario and composer. He first served at the Bonn court, and by 1764 was music director to Prince Heinrich of Prussia. In 1780-81 he settled in England, where he made his name as a brilliant violinist; then he turned to promoting concerts. He secured Haydn's visits to London in 1790-91 and 1794-5, led the orchestra in his London symphonies and played in performances of his quartets. He was also active as a conductor. His compositions include stage works, vocal pieces and various instrumental items; he arranged some of Haydn's symphonies for chamber ensemble. He is thought to have given Mozart's 'Jupiter' Symphony its nickname.
