(Born; ?Westonby, Circa; 1605; Died; ?Holborn, 5 May-29
July 1669). English theorist,composer and viol player. A Catholic, he served the royalist
cause in the Civil War and then the Bolles family at Scampton, Lincs. The most important
English writer on music of his day, he published The Division-Violist (1659), a
comprehensive, practical and highly successful viol tutor. His many works for viol solo
and consort include suites, divisions and fantasias.
