(Born; Palmi, 26 July 1866; Died; Varazze, 20 Nov 1950). Italian composer. He studied at the Naples Conservatory (1881-9) and taught there (director, 1916-36) and elsewhere. His first opera, Gina (1889), made a good impression, but its successor, the verismo piece La tilda (1892), was less successful. L'arlesiana, given in Milan in 1897 with Caruso, won favour in spite of a weak libretto; Cilea revised it several times, and it has enjoyed modest success in Italy. His one unqualified triumph was Adriana Lecouvreur (1902, Milan), which won wide success with its appealing subject and rewarding title role. His last opera, Gloria, was given at La Scala under Toscanini (1907) but withdrawn after two performances.
