Biography
Gurney, Ivor (Bertie)

(Born; Gloucester, 28 Aug 1890; Died; Dartford, 26 Dec 1937). English composer and poet. He studied with Stanford and Vaughan Williams at the RCM, before and after war service during which he was wounded, gassed and shell-shocked. Between 1919 and 1922 he composed intensively, especially songs in a flowing, sensuous style more influenced by Parry and German lieder than by the folksong movement. His later years were spent in mental hospitals.(c)Groves Dictionaries, MacMillan Publishers Limited, UK
