Guerrero, Francisco

(Born; Seville, ?4 Oct 1528; Died; there, 8 Nov 1599). Spanish composer. A pupil of Morales, he also taught himself the vihuela, harp, cornett and organ. He was maestro de capilla of Jaén Cathedral (1546-9) and then vice- maestro (1551) and maestro (1574-99) of Seville Cathedral. He visited Rome (1581-2), Venice and the Holy Land (1588-9).The most important 16th-century Spanish composer of sacred music after Victoria, he published 18 masses and Circa; 150 motets; because of their singable, diatonic lines, they remained in use in Spanish and Spanish-American cathedrals for more than two centuries after his death. He also published secular songs; many other works survive in anthologies and MSS. His brother Pedro (Born; Seville, Circa; 1520), his first teacher, was also a composer.(c)Groves Dictionaries, MacMillan Publishers Limited, UK
