Payne, Anthony (Edward)

(Born; London, 2 Aug 1936). English composer. He studied at Durham and became a critic for the Daily Telegraph; later he wrote for The Independent. Most of his compositions date from after his mid-30s and show an atonal development of English rhapsodism, reflecting his interest in Bridge and Bax, on whom he has written. He has also published a study of Schoenberg (1968). In 1966 he married the soprano Jane Manning.(c)Groves Dictionaries, MacMillan Publishers Limited, UK
