Dupré, Marcel

(Born; Rouen, 3 May 1886; Died; Meudon, 30 May 1971). French composer and organist. He studied with Guilmant, Vierne and Widor at the Paris Conservatoire (1902-14), returning as professor of organ (1926-54) while also serving as organist of StSulpice (1934-71) and appearing internationally as a recitalist. His works introduced a Lisztian virtuosity and a contemplative modality into organ music; he also wrote religious symphonic poems. Alain and Messiaen were among his pupils.(c)Groves Dictionaries, MacMillan Publishers Limited, UK
