For the shores of the distant homeland
Alexander Porfiryevich Borodin (1833 - 1887)
Dlja beregov otchizny dal'noj - For the shores of the distant homeland
For the shores of the distant homeland your were leaving behind these foreign lands.
In an hour never to be forgotten, in an hour of sorrow,
Before you, I wept for a long time.
My hands, growing cold.
Tried to hold you back;
My groans implored you
Not to leave.
But you tore your lips away
from the bitter embrace;
you called me to another lan
away from this land of gloomy exile.
You said: "On the day of our meeting
Beneath eternally blue skies,
In the shade of olive trees, fond embraces of love
Will again unite us, my friend"
But there, alas, where the vaults of the skies
Shine with a radiant blue
Where the waters dream beneath the cliffs
You sleep the eternal sleep
Your beauty, your sufferings have vanished in the funeral urn.
The kiss of our meeting has vanished too
But I am still waiting for it; you owe it to me!…
