Isolde’s Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde

Tristan und Isolde - Isolde's Liebestod

Isolde’s final monologue or Transfiguration (popularly known as the Liebestod, though this is more correctly applied to the Prelude), often appended to the Prelude in concert, can be seen as the Prelude’s true resolution. The overwhelming sense of yearning is still prevalent, by this time there is a very definite goal in view, an irresistibly strong forward movement towards its ecstatic apotheosis, culminating in what Richard Strauss described as ‘the most beautifully scored final chord in the history of music‘.
