Three Pieces for Clarinet Solo

Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971)

Three Pieces for Clarinet Solo

Written in 1919, the Three Pieces were dedicated to Werner Reinhart who financed the original Lausanne production of The Soldier's Tale. The pieces themselves also look toward The Soldier's Tale for inspiration. The sparseness of that work with its many short instrumental solos is well reflected here in the use of the solo clarinet. The first piece is set low, in the chalumeau register of the instrument, and is tranquil in nature. The second and third are more free-form in nature - the second, indeed, has no barlines at all.
