Serpent Solo

Serpent Solo

A distant relative of the Cornett, the Serpent, as its name suggests, is of serpentine shape. Made of wood covered in leather with a number of finger-holes in the manner of a recorder, it had its hey-day in sixteenth-century France accompanying the plainchant in church. it's military use was limited due to its soft and mellow tones and tendency to screech if over-blown. Appropriately, the Serpent piece heard here presents sea shanty-like themes in a virtuoso pot-pourri.
