Canzon terzadecima

Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643)

Canzon terzadecima

Six instrumental pieces by Gabrieli were published in 1608 in an anthology compiled by the Venetian Alessandro Raverii. These include  the Canzon Terzadecima by the 25-year old Girolamo Frescobaldi. Frescobaldi was born in Ferrara, and, according to a contemporary poem, ’had scarcely attained the seventeenth year of his age when the City heard him playing the organ with wondrous art and was astonished.’ His achievements continued, and in the same year as these canzonas were published, he was appointed organist of the Cappella Giulia in Rome, where he is reputed to have attracted an audience of 30,000 to his first recital.
