Overture in F Major

Hyacinth Jadin (1769-1802)

Overture in F Major

The sophisticated musical style which composers had learnt at church schools before 1789 was in direct contrast to the simple, popular style of the Revolution. This conflict is demonstrated in the Overture in F which the pianist Hyacinth Jadin wrote for the band in 1795 and in Gossec’s Symphonie militaire; both composers use the classical lines of the eighteenth-century serenades for wind chamber group, but knew that the texture would be thickened in performance, when several instruments would play each of the upper parts.
