Piers Hellawell: Lets Dance
Lets Dance for percussion solo was commissioned by Bulgarian percussion
virtuoso Daniella Ganeva in 1996, and was premiered by her at the DeLaWarr Pavilion,
Bexhill UK on 19th October 1996.
The piece lasts around 6 minutes and is in three parts, marked Confident- Floating -
Driving. The second, contrastingly slow, section is for tuned percussion, while the
outer sections, for untuned drums and cymbals, are celebratory perhaps even
echoing, the stamping rhythms of Bulgarian wedding music.
The codas vocal interjections in Russian the nearest I come to Bulgarian
are exhortations to dance as follows:
Everyone Should Dance! Everyone Should Dance! Lets Dance!
