Let's Dance

Piers Hellawell: Let’s Dance

Let’s Dance for percussion solo was commissioned by Bulgarian percussion virtuoso Daniella Ganeva in 1996, and was premiered by her at the DeLaWarr Pavilion, Bexhill UK on 19th October 1996.

The piece lasts around 6 minutes and is in three parts, marked Confident- Floating - Driving. The second, contrastingly slow, section is for tuned percussion, while the outer sections, for untuned drums and cymbals, are celebratory – perhaps even echoing, the stamping rhythms of Bulgarian wedding music.

The coda’s vocal interjections in Russian – the nearest I come to Bulgarian – are exhortations to dance as follows:

Everyone Should Dance! Everyone Should Dance! Let’s Dance!

For I feel that percussion is about dance, and dance is, at its simplest, a kind of human percussion.

Piers Hellawell 1999
