Tombeau de M Meliton

Marais: Tombeau de Mr Méliton

Marin Marais great Tombeau for Monsieur de Méliton (who is thought to have the organist at St-Jean-en-Grève until 1682) can be found in his first book of viol pieces, published in 1686. Marais, one of the greatest lyrical voices of the French Baroque, remained essentially undiscovered until the Early Music revival for the simple reason that his instrumental style is so closely connected with the rather specialised practices of the French viola da gamba on which he developed an idiom of amazing finesse and expression. The profound emotional power of the imitative Tombeau bespeaks a kind of ineffable sadness that was the special province of this great composer.
