Rachmaninov (1873-1943)

Fate Op 21 No 1 (1900)
(A. Apukhtin)

With its travelling crook
with its gloomy eyes
fate, like the stern guard,
Follows us everywhere!

Its face threatens one with misfortune,
in threats it has grown grey,
it has already overcome many people,
And it keeps knocking, always knocking!
"Knock, knock, knock!" "Enough my friend,
to chase after happiness"
"Knock, knock, knock…"

The poor man got completely used to it
they walk together, arm in arm,
gather harvest from the fields together,
As a reward they starve together.

The whole day through, rain falls on him,
in the evenings, the snowstorm caresses him,
and at night, from misfortune and in fright,
fate, in his dreams, knocks to him,
"Knock, knock, knock!"

Look, my friend, how others live!
Others gathered together to celebrate
riches, youth and glory,
their songs sounded merrily,
the wine was changed to entertain them,
their feasting lasts a long time.
But, growing pale, the guests grew silent:
the hand trembling with anger,
knocks on their window to them:
"Knock, knock, knock!"

A new friend has come to you,
Prepare a place! Knock, knock, knock!
There isn’t any happiness on this earth!

Once, full of expectation,
with youthful pleasure on his face
the lucky man came for a meeting.
He is still alone, all is silent,
the sunset is growing dark behind a wood,
and the nightingale already grows silent
but the heart trembles and beats:
"Knock, knock, knock…"

But here she comes,
and in a moment love, worry, expectation,
all has combined for them,
Into a single mad kiss!

The silent night looks on them,
the whole sky is full of light.
But someone quietly behind the bushes
"Knock, knock, knock…"

Your old friend has come to you,
Enough of happiness!
"Knock, knock, knock…"
