Tallis: A new commandment
The earliest source of A new commandment, another four-part English anthem,
dates from about 1570. It is seldom safe to argue from negative evidence, and we should
not assume that this work's absence from Wanley, Lumley and Certain Notes proves
that it post-dates them. It is, nevertheless, slightly less severe in style than the other
anthems on this recording, allowing itself a modest amount of melisma in order to paste
over the cracks between sections.
