Fragment from Musset Op.21 No.6

Sergei Rachmaninov (1873 - 1943)

Fragment from Musset Op.21 No.6

Text by Aleksei Nikolayevich Apukhtin (1841-1893)

Song text translation:

Why does my painful heart beat so strongly, and begs and thirsts for rest? Why am I so agitated and afraid at night? Someone struck on the door, groaning and whining... From the extinguished lamp flashed rays... My God! My heart is in my throat! Someone is calling me, whispering dolefully... Someone has entered... My cell is deserted, ther is no one here, midnight has struck... O lonliness, o destitution!
