Sorozabal - La Tabernera del Puerto: No puede ser!
La Tabernera del Puerto, composed in 1936, has remained the most popular of Sorozabal's Zarzuelas. It is set at a Northern port where shady characters from the Basque underworld are trying to smuggle a cargo of cocaine. The action centres around the mysterious new woman in town, Marola, who runs the tavern under the oppressive control of a smuggler. A local fisherman, Leandro has fallen in love with Marola, but is warned off, both by her and an old sailor who suggests that she is simply being used as bait to get him involved in the racket. In the romanza 'No puede ser!' (It can't be!) Leandro expresses his faith in Marola's good character and refuses to believe that she could have evil intentions at heart.
