Gią nella notte densa (from Otello)

Verdi - Otello: Gią nella notte densa

Verdi composed 'Otello' to a libretto by Arrigo Boito based on Shakespeare's play. After a violent and heroic first scene with disputes and brawls, the imposingly authoritarian Otello is cast in a more human and tender light in the second scene, alone with his new wife, the serene Desdemona. 'Gią nella notte densa' is their ensuing love duet which takes the form of an operatic conversation. Otello describes the atmosphere of the night, Desdemona sings of how Otello's stories of his past adventures had first won her heart, then they end with a paraphrase of Shakespeare's line 'She lov'd me for the dangers I had passed, And I lov'd her that she did pity them'.
