Prasti nyébèsnoye (from Queen of Spades)

Tchaikovsky - Pique Dame: Prasti nyébèsnoye

Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades traces the fortunes of the obsessive character Hermann who has fallen in love from afar with a woman he doesn't know. Her name, Lisa, is eventually revealed to him when he makes the shattering discovery that she is engaged to his friend Prince Yeletsky. Lisa however has noticed Hermann's haunting looks of ardour. As she sits at home, she expresses a sadness at being engaged to the Prince, then, once alone, is startled to see Hermann appear at her window, whereupon he sings her this arioso, 'Prasti nyébèsnoye, (forgive me, adorable creature) and reveals his tortured emotions and hopeless love.
