Charles Gounod (1818-1893)
Je veux vivre (from Romeo and Juliet)
Gounod's Romeo and Juliet was completed in 1867, is based on a libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, after Shakespeare's play of the same name. It is written in five acts, and this song Je veux vivre, meaning 'I want to live', comes from early in the first act during the masked ball at the Capulet residence. The song, sung by Juliet is directed to her nurse Gurtrude, and describes her lack of interest in Count Paris, the man that her father wishes her to marry, and in married life in general.
