Risparmiate...ch'ella mi creda (from La Fanciulla del West)

Puccini - La Fanciulla del West: Risparmiate...ch'ella mi creda

Puccini's opera 'La Fanciulla del West', (The Girl of the Golden West), is set in bandit-ridden California in its Wild West days, and was the first-ever opera to be premièred at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, with a star-studded cast of Emmy Destinn, Enrico Caruso and Pasquale Amato lead by Toscanini. This aria from Act III, 'Ch'ella mi creda libero e lontano' is sung by the bandit Dick Johnson as he begs his captors not to tell the local bar-owner Minnie, (to whom he's declared his love and promised to reform), that he's been lynched, but to let her believe that he's leading a better life in distant place. It is said that this aria was especially popular with the Italian army during World War I, as an equivalent song to the Brits' 'It's a long way to Tipperary'.
