Biography

Much in demand as an orchestral soloist, Mr. Shifrin has performed with the Philadelphia and Minnesota orchestras, the Dallas, Houston, Milwaukee, Denver, Memphis and Wichita symphonies, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the New York Chamber Symphony. He has also appeared in recitals across the country, including Alice Tully Hall, the 92nd Street "Y" and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Shifrin was appointed Artistic Director of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in March 1992, after an extensive nationwide search. Last year he was honored by the Society when he opened the season as featured soloist in an all-Mozart program; works included the Mozart Trio, Quintet and Concerto for Clarinet. With CMSLC he has toured extensively throughout the US and performed several times on national TV on Live from Lincoln Center. They recently released the collected chamber music of Debussy (Delos); the disc includes the Premiere Rapsodie and Petite Piece for Clarinet and Piano with Andre Watts. This season he and CMSLC will appear at a state dinner at the White House.

A highly acclaimed chamber musician, he appears frequently with such distinguished ensembles as the Guarneri, Tokyo and Emerson string quartets; with the latter he has also recorded the Mozart and Brahms Clarinet Quintets. Mr. Shifrin is also Artistic Director of Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, OR.

Mr. Shifrin has also appeared at the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center performing the Mozart Clarinet Concerto in its original version on a specially built basset clarinet. The Delos recording by Mr. Shifrin and the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra of this same work received a Record of the Year award from Stereo Review.

In an effort to broaden the repertoire for the clarinet and orchestra, Mr. Shifrin has championed 20th century works by American composers including, among others, John Adams, Joan Tower, Stephen Albert, Bruce Adolphe, Ezra Laderman, Lalo Schifrin and David Schiff. Current commission plans include a new concerto by Ellen Zwillich, to be premiered in the Fall of 2002.

In May 1987, Mr. Shifrin was chosen to receive one of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grants, an award given to outstanding American artists. He is also a recipient of a Solo Recitalists Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Currently a professor of music at Yale University, he has also served on the faculties of the Juilliard School, the University of Southern California, the University of Michigan, the Cleveland Institute of Music and the University of Hawaii.

Mr. Shifrin records for the Delos, Arabesque and CRI labels. His recording of the Copland Clarinet Concerto for Angel/EMI (no longer available) received a Grammy nomination. Other recordings are available on BMG (French Chamber Music with Andre Previn), SONY (Wynton Marsalis Fiddler's Tale) and DGG (clarinet quintets with the Emerson String Quartet).
