Guy Barker (Trumpet, Composer)
Born in Chiswick, West London, award winning Guy Barker took up the trumpet at the tender age of 12 and subsequently joined Bill Ashton’s National Youth Jazz Orchestra. At the age of 17, Guy sat in with Clark Terry to take a few lessons with the master brasssman and has also played with Dizzy Gillespie and became a friend of the bebop giant.
At the age of 21, he went to New York to meet and play with many of the young musicians on the scene and formed a band, which would later tour the UK. Studio work and engagements for the BBC along with work for bandleaders such as John Dankworth kept him very busy into the early 1980s. As the new decade progressed, Guy continued to widen the variety of his work performing with artists such as Quincy Jones, Gil Evans, Lena Horne, Clark Tracey, Ornette Coleman and Cleo Laine among others and has since become in great demand both as a performer and composer.
The Guy Barker Quintet has been established with its current personnel since 1996, and it continued to be the main performing vehicle for the talents of Guy, who is now acknowledged throughout the jazz world as a one of the leading brass players of today.
Perico Sambeat (Alto Saxophone)
Born in Spain, Perico studied piano from the age of six and later took up both saxophone and flute. He studied at the Barcelona Jazz Scholl in 1982 and began lading his own groups and working on the European circuit. In 1991, he moved to New York and began playing with many lending names across the jazz spectrum. He has led ten recording session of this own, including two with Bruce Barth and two with renowned pianist Brad Mehldau, and has made numerous appearances as a sidemen, as well as winning many awards in the Spanish Jazz scene.
Bernado Sassetti (piano)
Born and raised in Lisbon, Bernado studied piano at the Lisbon Academy of Music. He began plying jazz in his local clubs and subsequently worked around the world with many leading names in music, including Freddie Hubbard, Benny Golson, Kenny Wheeler, Art Farmer and the United National Orchestras. Bernado has recorded two albums of his own, ‘Salsetti’ and ‘Mundos,’ and has a new duo project with fellow pianist Mario Laginha. He has also composed a wide range of music with several commissions for film soundtrack and TV work already completed. He joined Guy’s group in 1994 and appears on all three of their albums.
Geoff Gascoyne (Bass)
Born in Nottingham, Geoff took up electric bass at 17 and began playing the acoustic version ten years afterwards. He has played with many international artists including Van Morrison, Georgie Fame, Diannne Reeves, Mulgrew Miller and Bill Bruford, and has led two CDs of his own; ‘Voices of Spring’ and ‘Winter Wonderland.’ He joined the Guy Barker group in 1996.
Sebastiaan de Krom (Drums)
The new face in Guy’s group, Sebastiaan was born in Dortrecht, Holland and studied at Berklee College in Boston. He later won a scholarship to study at the Thelonious Monk Institute for two years in New York, where he had the chance to play and study with such musicians as Herbie Hancock, Phil Woods and Dave Holland. Guy met Sabastiaan at a jam session in London in 1998 and now he is a in the group.
