Moussorgsky: Boris Godounov / Gergiev, Kirov Opera.
Two quite different versions of Mussorgsky's masterpiece for the price of one immediately mark this set out as something special. And two Boris's is exactly what you get: Nicholai Putilin and Vladimir Vaneev take the lead in, respectively, the 1869 and the radically re-composed 1872 versions which amount to a pair of operas barely open to comparison. Valery Gergiev directs the forces of the Kirov Opera in his customary thrilling manner, driving the action ever forwards. A marvellous enterprise from the world's most sought-after conductor.
